Bad Ones & Good Ones

My late Dad and I have something in common:  Our love & passion for the newspapers.

Dad used to work at many publications that produced newspapers. Dad worked at The Daily Press, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond News Leader, Baltimore Sun, The Hopewell News, The Washington Post, Washington Times, The Bourbon County Citizen-Advertiser, Lexington Herald-Leader, The Roanoke Times, The Roanoke Star-Sentinel and Colorado Springs Gazette. My father does not write articles. But he worked in publishing area as Linotypist. In my opinion, I still think my Dad's skills on Linotypist was just incredible and fast.

Dad told me of several stories of The Washington Post in the basement/ground level - all linotypists are there.  More than 100 Deaf people works part-time or full-time at The Washington Post. I may be wrong but I know for sure, Dad said that working at The Washington Post is always fun because there are so many Deaf people working & chatting as they took care of press. The owner of The Washington Post was Katharine Graham, one of most powerful women in Washington. However, Graham was a great advocate of Deaf people in Virginia, DC & Maryland mostly by giving the jobs to Deaf people from all over the region PLUS Gallaudet students.

Dad said that in the basement/ground level, there is a small hallway where you leave a big room into small hallway to get in bathrooms over there. But the problem is:  Too many Deaf people smoking weed waiting for their press to finish its job. Katharine knew all of it, she's fine with it. She often come down to take a cigarette break which was beyond the small hallway - so she did not go nuts when the smell of Marijuana was permeated all over the small hallway.  When Katharine retired, she passed it on to  her son who in turn pushed Deaf employees out - today, I do not know of any Deaf person working at The Washington Post.  Figures
My name - Dad & His Linotype equipment.

My father and I knew how to make successful related to publications, the perfect English is just hogwash and unimportant. Perfect English won't make your newspaper successful. Like Dad told me a long time ago about perfect English:

"Why must we have the perfect English while many subscribers are high school dropouts regular commoner  - It is pointless to use perfect English while many would not understand at all. The most important is the meats itself, not fancy English."

Even after Dad left the newspaper industry for the career at USPS, Dad do miss it very much. In fact, when my father retired from the USPS, he went ahead to form a monthly newsletter called Richmond Metro Deaf Community News on his own and shortly afterwards, he offered Richmond Club of the Deaf, Inc to adopt and finance the RMDCN. RCD approved it. My Dad is very meliticous

As you can see, I was well-versed when it comes to journalism. This kind of field is something that I always enjoyed the most. Dad taught me, Dad's friends told me stories about ITU (I bet you that these Honors students who worked at The Buff and Blue has no clue about ITU and they probably will google it up and say, she knew all along just to make themselves look good. *rme*

Most of the times, the bad ones were obsessed with perfect English would claim The Buff and Blue as their domain just because they have a good command of English so the Editorial Team is for them, not you. That kind of mentality. I can't stand them because nothing is far from the truth. Having a perfect command of English does not mean that you're a good writer or editor.

I noticed that too many Deaf people thought that since they are good with English, they are also great writers/storytelling.  It is only hogwash. Want some proof?  In Ely Center's Post Office, I usually see litter of BnB newspapers all over the floor - Why?  People pull it out of their PO Boxes and quickly glanced at it and thought it was a waste of their time, "Ugh, boring." And they threw it on the floor. So many BnB issues was all over the Post Office floors on every Friday.

Yes, every Friday!!

During the 2000s, my blogs generated thousands of hits/views all over the country and beyond.  I was the one-man show on my blog which was very popular among Deaf people. I literally run my own blog - and I occasionally asked Erin Whitney to guest blogging in and impersonate as McFly or Karen von Pills from time to time, it depends on the situation. Why did I want her to guest blog? Because I know that the hits/views will soar if i get people to rub the salt in any wound and ignited the controversial issues.

On other hand, DeafDC.com was created by Adam Stone and Rob Rice. They selected individuals who has the "so called" outstanding English skills. Many students on DeafDC are either in Honors program and/or Editors of The Buff and Blue or at NTID.  These fools except for Brendan Stern sucked at writing the story. They thought that they're good at writing articles or stories just because they have a good command of English. Often their articles on DeafDC can be so dry and disconnect from the reality- I mean, it is very blank article so much that you would think licking a white paper is better than reading their articles. Sorry for being offensive, but it is the truth.

My blog got thousands of views/hits daily, twice the numbers than DeafDC. Look, They had staff about 6-10 bloggers running DeafDC.com and I was the only one on my own and I still get twice the hits than DeafDC.com did! Look at me - the only one blogger versus 10 bloggers and I still whip them!!

How is that possible?  Because I know people. Because I know how to connect with ordinary people. Because I know people's buttons. Because I know the networking. Because I know how to ignite controversial stuff.

I remembered one time at Fowler Hall's lobby, one guy on the "bad ones" who was in Honors program, former Editor in Chief and a contributor to DeafDC confronted me in a lobby. He told me that my English sucked. He still do not understand why I get thousands of views than him. I told him this happened because I can connect with ordinary people, and he can't.

Later, the other time I bumped into Adam Stone -we had a nice conversation - it was much cordial, really. Then he said, "I write better than you, I don't know why people prefers yours over mine." I told him, stop using the big words. As if he knew how to use it - I don't think he gets it. You would notice that he would try to remind people that he is getting the doctorate degree. To remind them that he's smart. Whatever.

At that time, I also noticed that the BnB Editorial Team always passed it onto others who were in Honors program. Despite the fact that I knew how to edit, organize, delegate & write up for 3 small papers at VSDB, I never got a chance to be interviewed by anyone in the Buff and Blue. Not even once. When I fill out the application, I expressed the interest to work with Editorial Team because Media is my thing. It runs in my family generations.

But these assholes who runs the BnB kept me away - they would ask me to write up on sports, features and I was obliged to do that. I'm all for it because I truly believe in spreading the information to all.

What comforts me the most is seeing The Buff and Blue newspapers becoming a cosmic joke & irrelevant in 1990s. These so-called Honors students who were on the editorial team repeatedly failed to achieve the professional level along with the quality of tidbits that the community wanted to see and read - In a span of 10 years except for one was so bad that people would sneer at the BnB with funny & offensive jokes. Yea, every Fridays, it never failed me to see the hundreds of The Buff and Blue littering all over the floors at  Ely Center's Gallaudet Post Office.

When I said on my previous paragraph, "In a span of 10 years except for one" - One?  Who was the One?  Terry Giansanti, he was dynamic. Too bad, I did not join his team - at that time, I gave up on the BnB trying to break through the barrier created by these idiotic Honors students. Terry consistently puts in top quality articles on the BnB week in and out. During that year when Terry ran the Buff and Blue, it was refreshing to see a clean floor at the Gallaudet Post Office on every Friday.
It was rare to see an issue of the Buff and Blue littering during the Giansanti Year. If you don't see any newspapers on the floor at Gallaudet Post Office, it means that the Editors of The Buff and Blue has done the right job.

I will never forget what Shirley Shultz-Myers said to me after I complained to her (She was one of three Staff Advisors along with the late Brenda Keller & Robert Weinstock for The Buff and Blue back then) about the fact that the staff at the BnB kept on preventing me from joining the team. Know what she said to me?

"You're not in Honors English?  That's why you don't get it."

Fuck you, Shirley.

Allowing the Honors students to control The Buff and Blue was the worst decision in 1990s, their quality of articles & was not top-notched, it was amateurish at its best! Even with the fact that during my stay at Gallaudet for many years, I still failed to be an edtor of something at BnB, thanks to these "bad ones".

Cheers,

Like Gallaudet Athletic Department? Credit goes to Mike Weinstock

In the last few weeks, Gallaudet Bison football team has garnered the attention all over the country about its undefeated season.

Needless to say, it is a good publicity for Gallaudet. Especially with Gallaudet Athletic Department. I know how much Mike Weinstock puts his energy and time in this.

When Richard Pelletier was the Athletic Director, I can tell that he is not the type of person who is willing to push for the changes that propel Gallaudet's Athletic Department to the next level. I recall having few conversations with him about the needs to change. He would say, "No money, ask IKJ." several times.

When James DeStefano took over as the Athletic Director, he said the same thing when Sandy Ewan, me, and many others would try to talk about doing things to improve all teams, weight rooms, training rooms, meeting rooms, locker rooms, sports information office, football field, track, baseball field, soccer field et al. Whenever I entered the Field House, I don't feel "collegiate gymnasium", I feel that we are in "high school gymnasium".

James said, "No money, ask IKJ." That drove me nuts. That really frustrated me and Sandy Ewan. The buck just stops with IKJ, they always said that. We would have a long conversation about what Gallaudet can be if there are someone who is willing to make changes in spite of budget restraints.

When they built a new indoor swimming pool, I remembered Sandy Ewan battling I. King Jordan about getting the pool to be on the Olympic standard so that during the summertime, we can rent the pool to hearing swim organizations. Sandy knew that by doing that, we would make some money. I. King Jordan refused. And today, the pool is not equivalent of Olympics standard. So not many organizations wanted to rent Gallaudet's pool, so we lost $$. That was the last straw for Sandy. Sandy ultimately turned against I. King Jordan. And so did I.

I remembered asking Sandy Ewan who would be the best candidate to change everything from scratch. Sandy said, "Mike Weinstock". He went on to explain that not many people liked him but you can't deny the hard facts, wherever he goes, his teams flourished. He always found a way for his program to survive & grow. I had an opportunity to work under Mike and it was just great experience. I can say one thing: Mike knew his stuff.

Prior to the Gallaudet 2006 Protests, I noticed something alarming on a website, d3hoops.com. There were some people talking about Catholic University of America (CUA) being frustrated with Gallaudet's failures to make the CAC competitive. There were fans & sports reporters at Catholic, Marymount & Mary Washington talking about kicking Gallaudet out and get some school in so that its conference can be legitimate to have 2 or 3 teams qualify for any postseason tournament. But with Gallaudet on the bottom of the conference year in and out, it does do nothing but to slow other schools' performances.

I warned some people about it back on my old blog that sooner or later, don't be surprised that the CAC will kick us out even with the fact that we are the founding member of the conference. That's how fed up they are with Gallaudet Athletic Department. Some people believed me, some did not. After the 2006 Protests, Dr. Davila came in and made a quick change - he booted James DeStefano out and put Mike Weinstock in.

But that was too late, Catholic University of America and Goucher College has announced that they will leave the CAC to another stronger conference, Landmark in 2007. Both schools cited Gallaudet as one of several factors that pulled the other schools down from making the CAC stronger. The CAC took the action on this by telling Gallaudet to get out.

Even we founded the conference, they wanted us out. They felt that Gallaudet did not make an effort to do something about our programs. So Gallaudet was dumped by CAC, just like that. Mike Weinstock had a lot of work to do and he did do it in a short time. He found the ECFC for Gallaudet football, and they eventually joined the NEAC for other sports.

Mike Weinstock did not waste his time in making things happen. He improved the Hall of Fame, locker rooms, meeting rooms, football field with new artificial turf, Hoy Field, coach changes et al. He came up with a new logo, a brand new website and so on. Each time I see him announcing something new for the Athletic Department, I go "YES YES YES!"

Again, Mike knew his stuff.

Now we have women's basketball team that went to NCAA Tournament recently. Our baseball team has improved tremendously after the hiring of Curtis Pride. Volleyball's team is always good at Gallaudet but in the last couple of years, we have advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Oh, yeah, swimming teams has improved dramatically in the last 5 years. And the best part is that when you enter Field House and/or Hotchkiss Football Field, you can feel it is collegiate level.

Mike knew that by doing the changes, this atmosphere will do nothing but to motivate its players to excel in academics & athletics.

This is why Gallaudet football team is now 9-0. Yes, the boys worked hard to reach this undefeated record. Kudos to all of them. But the bottom line is: Mike Weinstock is the guy that made everything happen. For that, he has my utmost respect. I just wish that Sandy Ewan was alive to see this as well.

Oh, please!

Editor's Note:  I was encouraged by people to post this up on a public blogsite regarding the lawsuit instigated by Angela McCaskill. So here it is.

Cheers,

* * *

As of now, I'm in bed and at the same time I'm reading the 39-page lawsuit by Angela McCaskill against Gallaudet, MJ Bienvenu & Kendra Smith.

In fact, this lawsuit claimed that after Angela told T. Alan Hurwitz about her meeting with MJ Bienvenu where MJ bluntly criticized Angela for signing the anti-gay petition for a referendum to put the same sex on state ballot in Maryland. I thought MJ did do the right thing by confronting her to give Angela a piece of MJ's mind.

As for Angela, she immediately acted like she was a victim. She claimed that MJ discriminated against her because of her religious beliefs, of her race, of her belief in traditional marriage, and of her sexual orientation.

Her sexual orientation? Angela claimed that MJ discriminated against her because she is straight.

Oh, please.

Angela immediately pulled the race card to decry MJ for catching her name on the petition and got humiliated. In other words, Angela claimed that if she was white, MJ would not confront her on this subject. But since she is African American, MJ went after her.

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that she signed the petition to put the same sex marriage on the state ballot is not because she is against the marriage equality. By putting her name on the petition, she felt that what she did will enable people to discuss and learn from each other openly.

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that when the news raced across the Kendall Green, MJ & Kendra effectively ruined her integrity & reputation on the campus. The reputation that she worked hard to maintain at Gallaudet for more than 20 years.

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that MJ & Kendra was the one who reported to Drago Renteria's PlanetDeafQueer.com and supplied her with information regarding Angela's signature on the petition.

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that the malice against her by MJ Bienvenu, Kendra Smith, bloggers & vloggers were designed to "embarrass, humiliate, torment and cause her to have a severe emotional distress." She claimed that after everything, she suffered depression, sleep deprivation, lack of concentration, loss of memory, irritability, loss of appetite, hypertension, anxiety, paranoia, fear, intimidation, grief, and severe hot flashes.

Oh, please.

Angela said that the University did not act to reprimand MJ for harassment. What? Just because she confronted her in person and criticized her only *once*, that constituted an act of harassment?

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that MJ & Kendra spreads with false, vicious and humiliating rumors about her being an anti-gay, crippled her ability to keep the trust with diversity at Gallaudet.

Oh, please.

Angela strongly believe that the petition to ban same sex marriage referendum was not anti-gay. She just wanted to see it on referendum so that people can debate about it to educate the public at large.

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that T. Alan Hurwitz has ordered to cut the funds on Angela's Office of Diversity & Inclusion by $53,000 (Or 32%) which ultimately made her office totally ineffective in carrying the tasks out to the community.

Oh, please.

Angela claimed that during the Faculty Senate, she was abused verbally, condescending, castigated by others which resulted in her being embarrassed, humiliated & lack of respect.

Oh, please.

I could go on and on and on for the next 20 pages. And I won't. I stopped at #17 of 39 pages because it was redundant thing to deal with. My respect for Angela is gone primarily because she won't acknowledge, own it up, man it up & recognize that the petition *is* anti-gay.

Instead, you get to see her being defiant as well as using the race card to shield herself and to turn the tables upon people who confronted her for signing the anti-gay petition. She immediately claimed that they were harassing or demeaning her just because she is Deaf Black Christian Woman. This brat is clever by using the race card to act as a victim when she is not like that.

The University reserved the right to demote or fire any employee for speaking out on things that may contradict their job position. I believe it was in several states where a professor was fired for contradicting her beliefs publicly. Some professors sued and went to the state supreme court. And these people who sued lost their cases. The Courts said that the University has the rights to remove anyone who might contradict the university's vision & mission.

And so far, Angela is playing as a victim of "racism" by acting like everyone was out to harm, ruin or destroy her, and so far, she won't admit that what she did with the petition was anti-gay and wrong thing to do.

To make things worse, T. Alan Hurwitz, the current President of Gallaudet, was two-faced to Angela & MJ. When Angela whimpered & ran to T. Alan Hurwitz after MJ criticized her. Alan told Angela that MJ is wrong to do that and that MJ is a bully. Then the next day, Hurwitz ordered Angela to be placed on administrative on leave indefinitely. Why did T. Alan Hurwitz playing two-faced to Angela - why didn't he stick to what he said? He's is a big-time attention whore. Alan *should* reprimand MJ for her outbursts and he should not flip-flop on things like that. That's where his credibility was blown away when he said negative things on MJ one day and Angela the other day. You just cannot do that, folks.

However - Angela, give it up. Your son is a faggot and yet, you signed the petition to put the marriage equality on referendum - that means what? You're discriminating your own gay son!! What kind of a mother are you? OH, don't preach that you're a Christian. Who gives a damn about the fairy tales which can be found in the so-called Holy Bible.

Yes, the petition was anti-gay. Stop lying and own it up, Angela. She thought that being Deaf African American Woman certainly made her qualified to run the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. But there is a problem, she is not even qualified at all. She reeks of hypocrisy, that s for sure.

Cheers,

Kappa Gamma Is Overrated

Many years ago, I was interviewed by Kappa Gamma thugs. I was instructed to sit on this particular chair where they would blindfold me. Then led me to an interview room. I wore an expensive suit. When they took the blindfold off from me, the first thing I saw was Brian Bippus & John Hencker on a table. I could feel the heat of the candle right next to my ears.

Apparently, they put the candles very close to my ears. After going through the bullshit, I was pulled out of the room. After they took the blindfold off from my head, the first thing I see was the candle waxes were all over my expensive suit.

I remember seeing Bob Dramin telling me, "Sorry about that. You have to go now." I remembered asking him, "Why did you guys do that on my suit?" I remembered him saying nothing.

That was a major turn-off. They had the audacity to put the candles near my ears. David, what was that for? Was that even necessary? I tried to have the suit cleaned at a local dry cleaning store and the stains were so bad that they told me that I'd have to toss it away and buy a new one. I was stunned. You see, that suit I wore was the first and last time I used. And the so-called Kappa Gamma fraternity ruined it all.

Even as of today, they still never paid me for the damages they did to my suit.

This is one of few things that I disliked about Kappa Gamma. I had many friends who are in that fraternity. It is hysterical. They often spoke shit against each other when they are away from each other. But whenever they got together, they act like they are best pals. It is comical. I was roommate with one, and it was comical. From that point on, I knew I will never submit myself to that mentality of theirs. Needless to say, I chose the other fraternity.

One thing I liked about my fraternity, Alpha Sigma Pi, is that whenever we get mad at each other - we say it up to each other right away. Say it *now* so that we can move on past this. We would have a massive argument right there on the spot, never mind if it is in private or in public, the important thing is to get it off from our chests. Which explained why I am at ease chatting with my brothers than I'll be with these so-called but fake brothers in Kappa Gamma.

For boys who joined the Kappa Gamma fraternity, they did it not because they wanted to experience the "fraternity" feeling, they knew that if they joined, they would have "privileges" to get around. Which is overrated if you ask me. I know because I saw their paperworks and all their secret shit.

Some of my good friends are in that fraternity. I must admit that it took some time for me to be accustomed with them - turns out that some of them are able to be themselves. Many do not. Keith Clark is a good example of what happened in the last few years. But whatever.

Anyway, I'll give you the link which you get to read what Scott Vollmar & Jesse Saunders created the PowerPoint for their pledges back in 2001-2002 when they were at Gallaudet.

Today, Scott Vollmar is the ASL Specialist at New Mexico School for the Deaf (NMSD) and Jesse Saunders is the Coordinator of Youth & Outreach Programs at Gallaudet University. How disturbing is that, really?

That link has 112 slides. As you can see, Vollmar & Saunders pretty much demeaned anyone outside of their fraternity. They also glorified the abuses. Whenever they held someone else in contempt, they would type in very *tiny* font. What kind of message is that, really?

They celebrated the abuses.
They made fun of pledges.
They demeaned women.
They trashed other fraternities.

And today, Vollmar & Saunders holds the positions that may make an impact on Deaf youths. How warped is that? It is mind-blowing thing, right? But to me, that is Kappa Gamma. They are full of contradictions to a point where I knew everything to them is not noble nor honest to start with. You'd have to roll your eyes and mutter to yourselves, "Here they go again."

In my fraternity, I never had to experience that kind of thing - I remember my pledge experience, it is all about us, my fraternity and everything within it. That's it. We don't worry ourselves about anyone else outside of my fraternity.

When I saw 112 slides, I must admit I wasn't surprised by its poisonous messages. It is something that I kinda expected from them. But you see, I know Jesse & Scott, they are nice when you talk to them in person. But the problem is: Whenever they get in that so-called fraternity, they changed into something that is not something to be proud of. So are they really good people you get to know on daily basis? You do not know. That is the part you'll always wonder for the rest of your life, "Is he nice to me? Or is he using me?"

It is no wonder that Alex Abenchuchan has notified Kappa Gamma that he wanted no part of this fraternity from now on. When I first met Alex, I thought he was great despite the fact that he's bit high-strung on Christian beliefs. But I was surprised that he joined Kappa Gamma. I guess by going through the whole thing, Alex realized that it was a mistake from the start. So recently, he cuts them out just like that.

I hate to say this: What Alex Abenchuchan did was very brave but he will be ostracized for that.

Food for your own thoughts: Look at ViableVRS fiasco, the majority of guys that got caught with their hands in a cookie jar? They are members of Kappa Gamma fraternity.

Figures, eh?

Gee Whiz, Kappa Gamma Ruined Keith Clark, That Is For Sure

For a long time, I consider Keith Clark a good friend. When he was going through the rough patches, I checked on him from time to time just to see if he's doing well. He did. He was fired at two different locations because of his improper actions in Anchorage and in DC. But I still was there for him as a friend when many abandoned him.

Often when we were at Gallaudet, we would go out and party. It was always fun to hang out with him.

Recently I was puzzled that he quietly unfriended me on Facebook. Needless to say, I was curious so I contacted him upfront on that.

For many years, Keith and I always had a good, honest & straight conversation ... until he joined the Kappa Gamma fraternity. I think the fraternity has ruined him as whole. Ever since joining the fraternity, I can see that Keith was not honest with me as he kept on making evasive & vague comments each time I tried to have an open conversation.

I knew that he had two brother & sister - both are erratic to start with. I'm not crazy about Paula Clark mainly because she does not regret what she did many years ago - she drove the SUV on Kendall Green and ran over a couple of students who were sleeping outside defending the rat funeral. Yes, someone got injured and all that, Paula was drunk. That was inexcusable. That was Keith Clark's younger sister.

And today, Paula is Mental Health Therapist at Deaf Community Services of San Diego. Imagine that. How crazy is that? I would not want her to be my therapist knowing that she never publicly apologized to the victims who were injured by her actions.

And today, I got a message from Keith Clark telling me why he had to unfriend me:

"Ricky... I had to unfriend you because your actions and words have negatively impacted so many people I know; friends, clients, co-workers, family and more. I cannot keep you on my friend list while also keeping relationship with them... I had to choose what I thought would be best for me at this time. Thanks for understanding."

Whoa, Keith had the audacity to say that to me? After what I did for him when he was fired at two locations (due to the inappropriate behavior, that is). Man, Kappa Gamma ruined a good person and made him think of himself before the rest.

Keith claimed that I impacted on his clients, co-workers, family and more? That is such a lie and he knew it. For that, I'm coming publicly to dish the dirt on his past. And Keith, guess what? This is what you get for siding with your fake friends whom was not there for you in 1st place.

Good riddance!
